Meet Paul Schuurbiers, Compliance Manager and Legal Counsel at GoCredible. Paul makes sure GoCredible complies with all applicable laws and regulations, and that we run our operations the way they should be run, while also keeping a sharp eye on innovation.
What is your role at GoCredible?
“As Compliance Manager and Legal Counsel, I make sure GoCredible is ‘in control.’ That means we comply with all relevant laws and regulations, and that we carry out our work in line with policy. In short: I help make sure everything is legally in place, so we can keep doing what we do best.”
Why did you choose to join the GoCredible team?
“I find the payments world incredibly interesting. Not just because of the regulations, but also because there is so much innovation happening. GoCredible appealed to me right away: a cool fintech with a small, dynamic, and driven team. The short lines, the personal contact, and the room to really make an impact, that is what attracts me. It is an organization that is constantly moving, and I enjoy working in that kind of environment.”
How did you get to where you are now?
“I studied Law and Corporate Law in Tilburg. After that, I worked for five years as an in-house lawyer in the financial sector, at a crowdfunding platform. Through that role, I actually got in touch with Teun at GoCredible, because GoCredible also works with crowdfunding platforms. These days I work for different clients, but GoCredible is one of the places where I genuinely enjoy putting my knowledge to work.”
What major change do you see coming in your field?
“The amount of laws and regulations keeps increasing, especially in the financial world. The challenge will be to implement those rules in a way that they are not just an obligation, but a natural part of how you run your business. Artificial Intelligence will play a big role in that. For lawyers, the challenge is combining legal expertise with practical applications: how do you use technology to make compliance smarter and more efficient? I find that a very interesting development.”
What does a workday at GoCredible look like for you?
“First, a friendly check-in with colleagues over a cup of coffee. Then I get into the content. Lots of focus, and moving fast!”
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Always keep thinking rationally, but also really listen to your gut. What you feel about something is just as important as what is factually true or not. That balance is valuable, both professionally and personally.”
What do you like to do in your free time?
“I like to stay active: strength training, tennis, cycling, padel, I enjoy it all. Moving helps me clear my head when things are busy.”
What song absolutely has to be on the office playlist?
“Toto, ‘Africa.’ A real classic, and simply a great song that everyone knows.”
