After nearly twenty years as the dominant online payment method in the Netherlands, iDEAL will gradually make way for Wero starting in 2026. This new pan-European payment solution aims to create one uniform payment architecture across Europe. Wero was developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and is already live in Germany, France, and Belgium.
What is Wero?
Wero is a digital wallet and an account-to-account (A2A) payment system fully based on SEPA Instant Credit Transfers (SCT Inst). Payments are processed within 10 seconds, regardless of borders.
What can Wero do?
- Direct payments between bank accounts via SCT Inst;
- Enable alias-based payments: sending money based on a phone number or email address instead of an IBAN;
- Integration into existing banking apps, complemented by a standalone Wero app;
- Connect with existing ecosystems, including iDEAL and Payconiq.
The wallet is designed as an open and interoperable platform. This allows banks and PSPs to integrate functionality easily, without major infrastructure changes.
Why the shift from iDEAL to Wero?
Even though iDEAL has an unmatched market share in the Netherlands, its international scalability is limited. Despite PSD2, Europe still has a payments landscape of national solutions that do not connect well enough.
Wero breaks this fragmentation by:
- creating one European payment standard for both online and offline A2A transactions,
- offering an alternative to international card networks and Big Tech wallets,
- delivering a consistent user experience, including the checkout process and merchant flows,
- driving innovation, for example through request-to-pay.
Integrating iDEAL into Wero is therefore not a simple replacement, but a strategic step toward safer, more efficient, and more scalable European payments. Some features will follow later, but the foundation is in place.
What does Wero mean for consumers and businesses?
Consumers will get a faster and more user-friendly payment experience. Activating Wero happens directly through the banking app they already use, or through the Wero app if their bank supports it. Paying becomes easier because users no longer need to enter an IBAN: transactions can be made based on a phone number or email address. Transactions are processed within ten seconds, and security remains at the level consumers are used to from their bank.
For businesses, Wero is a major step forward in standardization and efficiency. One European account-to-account payment product will emerge, with a consistent user experience and standardized checkout flows. This reduces complexity and helps lower costs. Businesses also become less dependent on international card networks. Instant payments also make it easier to automatically reconcile payments and integrate them into financial processes. Finally, Wero opens the door to new use cases such as embedded payments, request-to-pay, and automated recurring payments. Plenty of opportunities to optimize customer interaction!
Migration starts in 2026 and will be rolled out in phases. If everything stays on schedule, Wero will be the new standard by the end of 2027.
